Brian Brumley

Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners

Term ends: End date to be determined by the governor

Please give a brief biography, including your education, licensure or certification level and employment history:

I have worked in the social work field since 1990. Over the 35 years I have 10 years in child welfare and 25 years in higher education. I have maintained my practice skills by working in Hospice, Home Health, and various roles in criminal justice settings working with youth and repeat offenders. I hold the LMSW-IPR in Texas. I have a BS in Political Science and Economics and an MSSW for the University of Texas at Arlington. My family has lived in Texas since the mid 1800’s and we continue to farm and ranch on land that was granted by the Independent Nation of Texas. I am married with three adult children, six grandchildren and my wife and I are raising a niece and nephew aged 11 & 13.

Give a synopsis of your regulatory and professional experience. Please emphasize your involvement with ASWB:

I have served as a Board Member to Texas NASW, Texas Association of Field Educators and a member of CSWE. I was appointed to the Texas Board in 206 and attended my first ASWB meeting in 2017. While on the Texas Board I have served as Head of the Ethics Committee, Vice Chair and since 2021 I have served as chair. I have served on ASWB REAL Committee and the Regulatory and research Committee. I have attended each Delegate Assembly since 2017 and all but one REAL Conference. During my tenure I have learned the value of regulation and how it impacts both the profession and the public.

Finally, make a brief statement on the major issues you see facing ASWB, and how you would address them:

I see AI, Supervision and regulation by a minimum standard exam as the major issues in the near future. Having served in this role over the past year I have recognized the immense value of the exam process and the value it brings to a profession. I fully support the exam system created by ASWB. AI and Supervision will become topics of discussion across all physical and mental health platforms over the next few months. I recognize that organizations cannot keep up with the pace of AI but they must acknowledge and regulate the changes that come with AI. Supervision will need to have consistent rules across jurisdictions. ASWB is on point to work with all stakeholders to meet these needs.
