When you pass the exam

Social work licenses are issued by the state and provincial boards. Your exam results will be made available to your licensing board in the state or province where you applied.

In most cases the board will contact you regarding your licensure status after you test. Exceptions are listed below.

Colorado, Florida, New Hampshire, Texas, and Utah candidates must complete a license application with the board after passing the examination.

California candidates must submit the LCSW Request for Initial License Issuance form and payment to the Board of Behavioral Sciences.

Kentucky candidates must upload a copy of the unofficial score report and pay the license fee online after passing the exam.

New Jersey candidates should visit the State Board of Social Work Examiners website to review the process for sending in applications.

West Virginia candidates will be contacted by the West Virginia Board of Social Work within 30 days of passing the exam.

Sending your exam results to another state or province

If you have already passed a social work licensing exam, you can transfer your scores to another state or province to get a license.
