Stephens’ appointment fills a one-year vacancy created in December 2023 by the resignation of Mary Weaver of Minnesota. As outlined in the association’s bylaws, the ASWB president makes the appointment to fill an unexpired term after receiving input and approval from the Board of Directors. Stephens will serve until elections are held at the November 2024 Annual Meeting of the Delegate Assembly, when he will be eligible for election to the same position if otherwise qualified.

Scott Stephens has served as a public member of the South Carolina Board of Social Work Examiners for 14 years. He has served in multiple roles in nonprofit organizations for more than 25 years, including executive leadership, event management, and fundraising. He holds a BA in political science from the University of South Carolina Upstate, an MA in pastoral counseling from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in pastoral counseling from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
