We understand that it is disappointing to fail a social work licensing exam. When you are ready to begin preparing for your next attempt, we suggest you begin with the diagnostic score report you received at the test center. It breaks down your performance by exam content area and serves as a good resource as you make a study plan.
Save your diagnostic report from the test center. ASWB cannot duplicate it.
When you are ready to retake the exam, call ASWB’s Candidate Services Center at 888.579.3926. Our representatives will be able to tell you whether you need further approval from your social work board to retake the exam. Be aware that some licensing boards limit the number of times a candidate may take the exam.
After ASWB has received your official exam results in approximately 10 business days, you will need to register with ASWB and pay the examination fee again. Once your registration has been processed, you will receive your Authorization to Test email and may schedule your exam with Pearson VUE.
ASWB policy states that candidates must wait 90 days between exam attempts. This waiting period exists for exam security reasons. It also benefits the candidate because it sets aside a period of time to prepare for the next attempt. Under limited circumstances, candidates may obtain a waiver that allows them to retake the exam before the end of the 90-day period.
About 90-day waivers
To inquire about waiving the 90-day waiting period, email firstname.lastname@example.org. Our representatives will be able to help you learn about the process and how to apply.
- Not all social work boards allow candidates to have 90-day waivers.
- Not all candidates qualify for waivers. You may only receive a waiver if your job is in jeopardy because you have not passed the exam AND your score was within five questions of the passing score.
- You must formally request a waiver and provide documentation of your job jeopardy. Email email@example.com to learn more about the process.
- Candidates may not receive more than two waivers for any single examination category.
