With sadness, ASWB shares news of the passing of Mildred ‘Mit’ Joyner, who served as president of the board of directors of the National Association of Social Workers from July 2020 to June 2023.

“Mit was a unifying force in the social work community, encouraging us all to focus on the greater good of the profession,” said ASWB Board President Roxroy Reid, Ph.D., LSCW. “In our work together, I was impressed with her ability to challenge those around her to see past our differences and be ever mindful of the social work code of ethics. Her presence and leadership in our field will be missed, but her legacy will live on in the impact she made throughout her career.”

The entire ASWB staff and volunteer leadership would like to express our deep condolences to Mit Joyner’s family and to her colleagues at NASW.

As NASW CEO Anthony Estreet, Ph.D., MBA, LCSW expressed, “Mit represented the social work profession domestically and internationally with undeniable passion, grace, and strength. Our profession has lost one of its brightest stars.”
