  • Director at Large, professional member

2014 Nominating Committee:

Bylaws pertaining to nominating and elections

The Nominating Committee expects to slate two nominees to run for each of the board positions, and two for the two-year position on the Nominating Committee. Names recommended by the membership will be considered for the upcoming vacancies. The charge to the committee is to choose the best candidates for the offices to be filled, while considering geographic location and other demographics, and suggestions are sought to assist the committee in identifying candidates.

Please submit names to the committee, addressed to the association office, by Monday, July 1, so that the Nominating Committee may develop a slate of candidates. Suggestions may be made by boards as a whole or by any board member or staff member. Individuals may suggest themselves.

Attached is a copy of a form that must be completed for each person recommended. Anyone to be recommended should know in advance that each nominee actually slated by the committee will need to send to the association office by mail or email a photo suitable to be duplicated, and a form completed with a biography, a summary of experience with ASWB and a candidate’s statement.

In accordance with the bylaws, the slate of candidates will be announced 30 days prior to the election.

Qualifications
According to the bylaws, nominees for the Board of Directors must be, when nominated, either a delegate, alternate delegate, or member or staff of a member board, or have been a member of a member board within the preceding two years. If a director ceases to be either a delegate or alternate, or member of a member board, such director member may complete his or her current term and is eligible to serve one additional term on the Board of Directors (Article VII, Section 2).

Nominees for the Nominating Committee must be a delegate or alternate, a member of a member board within the preceding two years, or the chairperson of an association committee at the time of nomination. At least two of the three Nominating Committee members must have attended at least one Delegate Assembly meeting prior to nomination, but one of the members can be a person who is otherwise qualified but who has not attended a Delegate Assembly (Article IX, Section 1).

One of the director at large board seats to be filled this fall must be held by a public member of a board.

Also, please remember that according to the bylaws, current members of the Nominating Committee are ineligible for nomination to another position in the year of their committee service. The bylaws also prohibit resigning from the committee in order to run for another office. Attached is a copy of the ASWB Bylaws articles on elections and the board.

Each member of the ASWB Board of Directors is required to sign a statement of commitment. This is also attached so that you can provide copies to possible candidates for their review. The other attachment is a description of the duties of board members, so that people can make an informed decision in light of the time requirements.

If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Dwight Hymans at the association office, (800) 225-6880, Ext. 3110, dhymans@aswb.org.
